Reviewed quarterly.

What is the difference in prediction markets vs sports betting? At a sportsbook, you bet against the house at odds it sets. On a prediction market, you trade against other people at a price the crowd sets. Canada widens the legal gap further. Provinces regulate sports betting, while securities regulators authorize only a narrow set of event contracts, and they have ruled sports out.

Below, we compare prediction markets vs sports betting on structure, cost, regulation, and risk. We also explain what Canadian regulators said on August 27, 2026.

How Does Each One Work?

A sportsbook runs a house model. Every bet is a contract between you and the bookmaker. The bookmaker sets the odds, takes the other side, and manages its own risk.

A prediction market runs an exchange model. Traders buy and sell yes or no contracts that settle at $1 if the event happens and $0 if it does not. The price is the probability. A contract at $0.62, for instance, signals a 62 percent chance.

So the core difference in prediction markets vs sports betting is the counterparty. One is the house. The other is everyone else.

How Do the Costs Compare?

Sportsbooks charge through the odds. If both sides of a game sit at -110, the implied probabilities add up to about 104.7 percent. That extra 4.7 percent is the bookmaker’s built-in margin, often called the vig.

On the other side of prediction markets vs sports betting, the charge works differently. Prediction markets earn transaction fees on trades, whichever side wins. Fees and spreads vary by platform, so check the schedule before you trade.

Account limits differ too. Sportsbooks may restrict players who win too often. An exchange has less reason to, since it earns from volume rather than from your losses.

Sportsbook

Prediction market

You trade against

The house

Other traders

Price set by

The bookmaker

The market

Operator earns

Margin built into odds

Fees on trades

Winners may be limited

Yes

Less likely

Canadian regulator

Provincial gaming bodies

CSA and CIRO, for authorized contracts

Sports available in Canada

Yes

No

Is Sports Betting Legal in Canada?

Yes. Bill C-218 came into force on August 27, 2021, legalizing single-event sports betting by amending the Criminal Code. Provinces then built their own regimes. In Ontario, the AGCO sets the standards for operators.

The market keeps widening. Alberta opened its regulated iGaming market on July 13, 2026. As a result, Canadians in more provinces can now bet on sports with licensed operators.

Our guide on whether prediction markets are legal in Canada covers the other lane in full.

Where Do Regulators Draw the Line on Sports Contracts?

On August 27, 2026, the CSA and CIRO issued Joint Staff Notice 91-307. It states: “Event Contracts based on sports and entertainment events or outcomes should not be regulated within securities and derivatives legislation.” CIRO added that it will not facilitate or approve dealer applications to trade them.

That is confirmed. What follows is our inference. If securities regulators will not oversee sports contracts, provincial gaming regimes are the likely home for them. The notice itself does not name gaming regulators, though.

Two further points matter:

Other categories are still open. The regulators say guidance on other event types “will follow.”

The authorized menu is unchanged. Dealers may offer only economic, environmental and financial contracts, with a minimum 30 day term.

So in the prediction markets vs sports betting debate, Canada’s securities lane will not carry sports markets. That matters because sports drive most U.S. prediction market activity. Crypto Times puts sports at roughly 70 percent of Kalshi’s U.S. volume. Our Kalshi in Canada guide explains what that leaves for Canadians.

Which Is Riskier for Canadian Users?

Neither is low risk. Both can lose you money, and each has its own protections.

Sportsbooks operate under provincial rules. In Ontario, licensed operators must follow AGCO standards, which include responsible gambling requirements.

Prediction markets through an authorized dealer operate under CIRO rules. Contracts must run at least 30 days, and leverage is not permitted.

Offshore platforms carry neither set of protections. A 2026 study of 1.4 million Polymarket users found that about 71 percent finished in the red.

Meanwhile, with prediction markets vs sports betting, the label matters less than the behaviour. Frequent, fast, emotional wagering carries risk in either product. If it is causing harm, ConnexOntario offers free support at 1-866-531-2600.

Where Does PredictX Fit in All This?

The line regulators drew explains why this topic matters to us. Which regulator oversees a product depends on what the product is. PredictX Markets Inc. is a Canadian company that builds prediction market technology for licensed operators, rather than a consumer platform. We do not run a market you can trade on, and nothing in this article is a product offer.

Two design principles shape what we build:

Peer-to-peer matching. Participants trade against each other, and the platform earns a commission on matched trades rather than profiting from losses.

Operator-held funds. Player balances stay with the licensed operator. The technology layer calculates and settles; it does not custody anyone’s money.

We also publish this blog, since platforms that are selling something answer most questions about prediction markets in Canada. Join The Briefing by PredictX for regulatory news without that bias.

Prediction Markets vs Sports Betting: Frequently Asked Questions

The basics

What is the difference between prediction markets and sports betting? In sports betting, you bet against a sportsbook at odds it sets. In a prediction market, you trade yes or no contracts against other traders at a market price. Sportsbooks earn through built-in margin, whereas exchanges earn through fees.

Are prediction markets the same as sportsbooks? No. A sportsbook is the counterparty to every bet. A prediction market is an exchange that matches traders with each other.

Do prediction markets have a vig? Not in the sportsbook sense. They typically charge trading fees, and prices can include a spread. Always check a platform’s fee schedule.

Canada and the rules

Can you bet on sports on prediction markets in Canada? No. CIRO will not approve dealer applications to trade sports event contracts, and the authorized dealers offer only economic, financial and climate contracts.

Is sports betting legal in Canada? Yes. Single-event sports betting became legal when Bill C-218 came into force on August 27, 2021, and provinces regulate it.

Who regulates sports event contracts in Canada? Securities regulators say these contracts should not fall under securities and derivatives law. Provincial gaming regimes are the likely home, but that is our inference, not confirmed guidance.

This article is educational and is not legal, tax or investment advice.
