A Plain Language Guide for Canadians

Last updated: August 30, 2026. Reviewed quarterly.

Short answer: a prediction market is an exchange where people trade contracts tied to the outcome of a future event. Each contract pays a fixed amount if the event happens and nothing if it does not. The price of the contract is the crowd’s estimate of the probability. A contract trading at 65 cents means the market thinks there is roughly a 65 percent chance.

That last part is what makes prediction markets different from a bet slip, and it is the idea everything else in this guide builds on.

How a Prediction Market Contract Works

Every market starts as a yes or no question with two fixed features: a resolution date and a source of truth that decides the answer. For example: will Canada’s annual inflation rate come in above 2.5 percent in the next release from Statistics Canada?

Contracts trade between zero and one dollar. You buy the side you think is underpriced. When the event resolves, the winning side pays out at $1 per contract and the losing side is worth nothing.

You do not have to wait for the resolution date. Because contracts trade continuously, you can sell your position at the current market price at any point. That is the feature that makes prediction markets feel closer to trading than to betting.

Why prediction market prices are probabilities

The pricing logic is simple. If a contract pays exactly $1 when an event happens, then a rational buyer will pay up to the amount they believe the event is worth. At 30 cents, you are risking 30 cents to make 70. That only makes sense if you think the event is more than 30 percent likely.

Every trade nudges the price toward the collective view. The result is a live probability estimate, updating in real time, backed by people with money at stake rather than opinions in a poll.

A prediction market example, step by step

Say a contract on “the Bank of Canada holds rates at its next meeting” is trading at 72 cents.

You buy 100 contracts for $72.

The Bank holds. Your contracts settle at $1 each, paying $100. You made $28.

The Bank cuts instead. Your contracts settle at zero. You lost the full $72.

Or, a week before the meeting, sentiment shifts and the price rises to 85 cents. You sell for $85 and take $13 without waiting for the outcome.

Notice the ceiling. The best possible result is that something you bought below a dollar settles at a dollar. That structural cap is a genuine difference from owning a share in a growing business.

Who Takes the Other Side of a Prediction Market Trade?

This is the part most people get wrong.

In traditional betting, you wager against the house. The operator sets the odds, holds a margin, and profits when you lose. Your interests and theirs are directly opposed.

On a prediction market, you trade against other participants. Someone believes the opposite of what you believe, and the exchange matches you. The platform’s revenue comes from a commission on matched trades, not from your losses. It is closer to a stock exchange than a sportsbook.

That distinction matters for pricing. Because the price moves only when participants disagree and trade, it reflects genuine collective belief rather than a margin an operator built in.

Are Prediction Markets Accurate?

Reasonably, and the mechanism is intuitive: people who are confidently wrong lose money, and people who are consistently right accumulate more influence over the price. That feedback loop is missing from opinion polls and pundit forecasts.

But accuracy at the market level does not mean profitability at the individual level, and this is where a lot of newcomers get burned. A 2026 study by researchers at ESSEC Business School, HEC Montréal and the University of Toronto examined 1.4 million Polymarket users and roughly US$20 billion in volume. It found that about 71 percent of users finished in the red, with the top 1 percent of traders capturing 84 percent of all gains.

Prediction markets are zero-sum before costs and negative-sum after them. Every dollar a winner takes came from a losing participant, minus the spread and commission. The market can be an excellent forecaster while most of the people in it lose money. Both things are true at once.

Prediction Markets vs Betting and Investing

Prediction market

Fixed-odds betting

Investing

Price set by

Participants trading

The operator

Public markets

You trade against

Other participants

The house

Another market participant

Platform earns

Commission on matched trades

Margin built into odds

Fees or commission

Payout

Fixed: $1 or nothing

Fixed odds

Open ended

Exit before the end

Yes, sell any time

Rarely, limited cash-out

Yes

Upside ceiling

Capped at $1 per contract

Capped at the odds

Uncapped

The row that matters most is the last one. Prediction markets have a hard ceiling. That is why regulators and portfolio managers keep drawing a line between this and investing, whatever vocabulary an app uses.

What Is a Prediction Market in Canada?

Canada permits a much narrower version than the global picture. Since March 2026, two authorized dealers may offer Canadians event contracts in three categories only: economic indicators, financial markets and climate, each with a minimum 30-day term. Sports, elections and entertainment contracts are not permitted, and no prediction market platform is itself registered here.

The rules come from CIRO’s Administrative Bulletin 26-0076. For the full breakdown, including why Polymarket is banned in Ontario, see our guide to whether prediction markets are legal in Canada.

Who Builds Prediction Markets, and Where PredictX Fits

Most people encounter prediction markets through a consumer app. Behind that app sits a different layer of the industry: the technology that runs the market itself, matching trades, holding the order book, and settling contracts when an event resolves.

PredictX Markets Inc. works in that second layer. We are a Canadian company that builds prediction market technology for licensed operators, rather than a consumer platform. We do not run a market you can trade on, and nothing in this article is a product offer.

Two design principles shape what we build, and they are worth understanding regardless of which platform you use:

Peer-to-peer matching. Participants trade against each other, and the platform earns a commission on matched trades rather than profiting from losses.

Operator-held funds. Player balances stay with the licensed operator. The technology layer calculates and settles; it does not custody anyone’s money.

We also publish this blog because the most common questions about prediction markets in Canada currently get answered by platforms selling something or by law firms writing for other lawyers. Join The Briefing by PredictX if you want the regulatory and platform news without either bias.

What Is a Prediction Market: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a prediction market in simple terms? An exchange where people trade contracts on whether a future event will happen. Each contract pays $1 if it does and nothing if it does not, so the price acts as a live probability estimate.

How do prediction market prices work? A contract price between zero and one dollar represents the market’s estimated probability. A price of 40 cents implies a 40 percent chance, and a correct call at that price returns roughly 2.5 times the stake.

Are prediction markets the same as gambling? Not legally in Canada, where authorized event contracts are regulated as derivatives rather than gaming products. Structurally, they share features with both: peer-to-peer pricing and hedging uses on one side, fixed binary payouts on the other.

Are prediction markets accurate? They are generally strong aggregate forecasters, because participants with money at stake are penalised for being wrong. That says nothing about whether an individual participant profits.

Do most people make money on prediction markets? No. The best available evidence, a 2026 study of 1.4 million Polymarket users, found roughly 71 percent lost money and the top 1 percent took 84 percent of all gains.

What can Canadians trade on a prediction market? Only economic indicators, financial markets, and climate contracts with a minimum 30-day term, through one of two CIRO-authorized dealers. Sports, elections and entertainment are excluded.

Who are prediction markets actually useful for? Two groups: hedgers with genuine economic exposure to an outcome, such as someone on a variable rate mortgage taking a position on rate moves, and specialists with better information than the market. Casual participants acting on a hunch are the group the loss data describes.

This article is educational and is not legal, tax or investment advice. PredictX Markets is a prediction market technology company and does not operate a consumer trading platform.

If trading or gambling is affecting your wellbeing, provincial support is available across Canada, including ConnexOntario, 1-866-531-2600.

Want the full picture? Read Prediction Markets in Canada: Everything You Need to Know.

Last updated: August 30, 2026.
