Kalshi in Canada: how access works through Wealthsimple Predict

Kalshi in Canada: How Access Works

Last updated: October 2, 2026. Reviewed quarterly.

Is Kalshi in Canada yet? Not directly. Canadians cannot open a Kalshi account themselves. Instead, one route exists: Wealthsimple Predict, a CIRO-authorized app that offers about 4,000 Kalshi-sourced contracts. Those contracts are limited to economic indicators, financial markets and climate. Sports and election contracts are not available.

That is the short version. Below, we explain how Kalshi in Canada actually works. We also cover what you give up compared with the U.S. version, and why the legal picture is still moving.

Can Canadians Use Kalshi Directly?

No. Kalshi is a U.S. exchange regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). In October 2025, it opened to customers in many countries. However, Canada was not among them. Reporting also confirms that Kalshi’s own platform stays unavailable to Canadian users.

Kalshi’s own help centre says eligibility outside the U.S. depends on its Member Agreement. So the company’s documents, not a blog, set the final list of countries.

Canada’s regulators have been equally blunt. A CIRO spokesperson told reporters that “prediction-market products are not entitled to enter Canadian markets simply because they exist elsewhere.” In other words, being legal in the U.S. does not carry over.

How Does Kalshi in Canada Work Through Wealthsimple?

First, Wealthsimple received CIRO authorization in March 2026. Next, on June 18, the company and Kalshi announced their partnership. Finally, Wealthsimple Predict launched on July 29, 2026, as a standalone app without Kalshi branding.

Here is the chain, step by step:

  1. Kalshi lists and clears the contracts on its U.S. exchange.
  2. Wealthsimple, a CIRO dealer, connects you to that liquidity and carries the compliance duties.
  3. You trade yes or no contracts that settle at $1 if the event happens and $0 if it does not.
  4. Prices work as probabilities. A contract trading at $0.85 implies roughly an 85 percent chance.

The table below compares the two routes.

What Can You Trade, and What Is Missing?

CIRO allows only three categories: economic indicators, financial markets and climate. Every contract must also run for at least 30 days, because that rule comes from Canada’s binary options ban.

As a result, the Canadian menu is much smaller than the U.S. one. Sports, in particular, make up roughly 70 percent of Kalshi’s U.S. activity, according to Crypto Times. None of that is available here.

Wealthsimple itself describes Predict as a “limited subset” of Kalshi’s offering. We agree with that wording. So if you came for sports or election markets, you will not find them.

Why Is Kalshi Under Legal Pressure Elsewhere?

Canada chose the securities route, so regulators treat these contracts as derivatives. In the U.S., though, the fight is different. For example, on July 31, 2026, New York sued Kalshi, alleging it runs an unlicensed gambling business. Meanwhile, the claims remain allegations, not findings.

Why does this matter to Canadians? Two reasons stand out:

  • The label is contested. The same product is a derivative in one lane and a bet in another.
  • Canada has two lanes too. Securities regulators cover the authorized contracts, whereas provincial gaming regulators cover sports wagering.

Based on that, our reasoned inference is that any expansion into sports would meet the gaming lane first. That is analysis, not confirmed law.

What Are the Risks of Working Around the Rules?

Search results are full of workarounds for opening a Kalshi account from Canada. We will not explain any of them. Bypassing a geographic block breaches the platform’s terms and can freeze your balance. It also gives you no Canadian protection, because no CIRO dealer sits between you and the exchange.

Likewise, the same warning applies to unauthorized platforms. Our guide on whether Polymarket is legal in Canada shows how regulators treat them.

Where Does PredictX Fit in All This?

Kalshi runs an exchange. PredictX Markets Inc., however, does something different. We are a Canadian company that builds prediction market technology for licensed operators, rather than a consumer platform. We do not run a market you can trade on, and nothing in this article is a product offer.

Two design principles shape what we build:

  • Peer-to-peer matching. Participants trade against each other, and the platform earns a commission on matched trades rather than profiting from losses.
  • Operator-held funds. Player balances stay with the licensed operator. The technology layer calculates and settles; it does not custody anyone’s money.

We also publish this blog, since platforms that are selling something answer most questions about prediction markets in Canada. Join The Briefing by PredictX for regulatory news without that bias.

Contracts and rules

What can you trade on Kalshi in Canada? Contracts on economic indicators, financial markets, and climate. Each must run for at least 30 days.
